9. Project Description/Overview
This project will serve to replace the main pump station on the south side of the CSX Railroad Right-of-Way. This pump station is severely undersized and is lacking sufficient pumping and storage capacity. The size of the existing wet well cause the influent gravity sewer mains to surcharge (i.e., utilize existing pipe for storage) in order to efficiently transport the City’s sewage north to the wastewater treatment plant. This pump station serves all of the sanitary sewer needs for the entire City of Pass Christian, south of CSX Railroad. The inefficient pumping and storage capabilities of this pump station has the direct result of increasing the failure probability of the City’s sewage collection and transport system upstream from this station. A failure of this station could have catastrophic environmental consequences for sanitary sewage overflows from the incoming gravity sewer mains as well as six other pump stations that pump to this station. This pump station is located directly adjacent to the City’s stormwater conveyance system, which, if impacted, would have a direct route of hydraulic communication of sanitary sewage to Bayou Portage as well as the Bay of St. Louis.
10. Project Goals/Objectives
To provide a safe and reliable source of sewage transport across the City with the expectations of improved employee safety and efficiency of the system to deliver the waste to the WWTP without overflows, spills, etc. in a continuous effort to eliminate any potential environmental impacts due to domestic sewage.
11. Which of the following authorized uses set forth in the GOMESA Act does this project fall under?
(A) Projects and activities for the purpose of coastal protection, including conservation, coastal restoration, hurricane protection, and infrastructure directly affected by coastal wetlands losses
Yes: This project will serve to continue to protect coastal areas by repairing failing sewage transport systems and improving the efficiency of the existing system, thereby eliminating sources of contamination to coastal areas by domestic waste.
(B) Mitigation of damage to fish, wildlife, or natural resources.
(C) Implementation of a federally-approved marine, coastal, or conservation management plan.
(D) Mitigation of the impact of Outer Continental Shelf activities through funding of onshore infrastructure projects.
