- 9. Project Description/Overview
- This project will serve to replace a portion of the existing gravity sewer system on Henderson Avenue, within the city limits of Pass Christian. The project boundaries extend along Henderson Avenue from CSX Railroad to West North Street. The existing system was constructed during the 1950's and 1960's and is still comprised of vitrified clay pipe with intermittent locations of PVC due to repairs that have been required through the years. With the increase in activity in these areas, due to continued efforts to rebuild post-Hurricane Katrina, upgrades to existing fiber optic infrastructure, gas service and industrial activity due to an upswing in the economy, the city has been experiencing frequent failures in the aging sewer collection system. While the known failures in the pipes are being addressed as the problems surface, there are many more locations with similar problems that are also in need of repair. These types of problems range from circumferential cracks in the pipe, root penetrations, cracks at the pipe bells, etc. These failures are believed to be a result largely due to the increases in the vehicular loadings causing excessive vibrations over the years, poor soil conditions, and the toll taken by numerous storm events since the infrastructure was installed. In addition to the ongoing problems with the pipes, the accompanying manholes area experiencing considerable degradation due to the sewer gases present in the system. These gases have caused immeasurable damage to the old brick manholes in the failure of the brick mortar.
