- 9. Project Description/Overview
- This project proposes the replacement of an existing aged and damaged timber pier with a resilient, long-term reinforced concrete pile and flow-through composite decking. The existing timber pier has significant structural deterioration due to age and storm events. Several structural members are compromised and limiting safe public access. The City of Gautier is currently making minimal repairs to sections to allow safe access to the public, but is becoming financially unsustainable.

- (A) Projects and activities for the purpose of coastal protection, including conservation, coastal restoration, hurricane protection, and infrastructure directly affected by coastal wetlands losses
- Yes: The upgrades to concrete piles and flow through decking directly improve the resilience to hurricanes ,as well as, increased exposure to wave energy and storm surge resulting from wetland losses.
- (B) Mitigation of damage to fish, wildlife, or natural resources.
- Yes: Flow-through decking allows more sunlight to penetrate into the water below. Minimizing shading impacts to aquatic vegetation and other habitats. Increased design life of concrete piles reduces the frequency of future marine construction limiting cumulative environmental disturbance.
- (C) Implementation of a federally-approved marine, coastal, or conservation management plan.
- (D) Mitigation of the impact of Outer Continental Shelf activities through funding of onshore infrastructure projects.
