- 9. Project Description/Overview
- Improvements to the Northern Regional WWTF which consist of construction and installation of chlorination facilities for disinfection of the treated wastewater prior to discharge. Additional wastewater flows will be coming in from Stennis Space Center, Kiln Utility and Fire District and Hancock County Water & Sewer District.
- 10. Project Goals/Objectives
- 1. To provide improved and more reliable wastewater disinfection with additional capacity and capabilities to adequately treat increased wastewater flows. 2. Lessen the probability of environmental impacts from potential unsatisfactorily treated and disinfected discharge to surrounding streams, bayous, the Jourdan River, the Bay of St. Louis and the Mississippi Sound.

- (A) Projects and activities for the purpose of coastal protection, including conservation, coastal restoration, hurricane protection, and infrastructure directly affected by coastal wetlands losses
- Yes: The project will result in providing improvements necessary for reduction of the possibilities of unsatisfactorily disinfected wastewater discharges which may impact the water quality to coastal wetland areas adjacent to the Jourdan River, the Bay of St. Louis and the Mississippi Sound.
- (B) Mitigation of damage to fish, wildlife, or natural resources.
- Yes: The project will help to ensure improved water quality to the surrounding receiving water bodies, as well as, reduction of possible threats from potential discharge of unsatisfactorily disinfected wastewater which could result in negative impacts to fish, wildlife and natural resources.
- (C) Implementation of a federally-approved marine, coastal, or conservation management plan.
- (D) Mitigation of the impact of Outer Continental Shelf activities through funding of onshore infrastructure projects.
- Yes: Improved and more reliable disinfection capabilities to treat additional amounts of wastewater flows expected to be received at the Northern Regional WWTF. With the proposed improved disinfection facilities described herein, the facility will have ample available capacity to accept the additional anticipated flows to be received at this WWTF.
