- 9. Project Description/Overview
- Sioux Bayou Landing is a 40 site RV resort situated on 8 acres of waterfront property on Sioux Bayou in Gautier, Mississippi. The property is located 2 miles south of 1-10 and within minutes of the Pascagoula River and the Gulf of Mexico, by boat. The original part of the property is protected by 1,700 feet of bulkhead that was constructed in 2012. In 2023, an additional 3 acres of adjoining waterfront property was purchased to expand and plans are underway to develop this acreage into an additional 30 RV sites, boat storage, public kayak launches, and guest facilities. Unfortunately, this acreage has been left unprotected for many years and considerable erosion has occurred. This area is known as Nature's Playground and an abundance of wildlife call it their home. Our vision would be to bulkhead the remaining 1,800 feet of waterfront and protect the rest of the property from storm erosion, land loss, and natural habitat intrusion.
- 10. Project Goals/Objectives
- 1) Expand and enhance water recreation (boats and kayaks) 2) Reduce the impact of flooding and storm surge from hurricanes and rising tides. 3) Habitat protection from land erosion 4) Land conservation
- 11. Which of the following authorized uses set forth in the GOMESA Act does this project fall under?
- (A) Projects and activities for the purpose of coastal protection, including conservation, coastal restoration, hurricane protection, and infrastructure directly affected by coastal wetlands losses
- Yes: The bulkhead would greatly reduce the impacts from tides and storms and mitigate any further land loss and erosion.
- (B) Mitigation of damage to fish, wildlife, or natural resources.
- Yes: A considerable amount of wildlife inhabit this area. This project would protect this natural resource for wildllife.
- (C) Implementation of a federally-approved marine, coastal, or conservation management plan.
- (D) Mitigation of the impact of Outer Continental Shelf activities through funding of onshore infrastructure projects.
- 12. Project Timetable/Milestones
- September 2024 - Begin site prep and mobilization of materials October 2024 thru February 2025 - Construction of the 30 RV sites with full hookups. March 2025 - Plant additional mature trees and add landscaping to each site April thru May - Construction of 1,800 feet of bulkhead around additional acreage June thru July - Construction of kayak launches, boat storage area, and guest facilities. August - Open to the public
- 13. Project Timing
- Short-term
- 14. Current status of architectural/engineering plans & specifications for this project (if applicable):
- In Progress Funds Budgeted
- 15. In what way does this project meet the goals and objectives of the Department of Marine Resources, which includes enhancing, protecting and conserving the marine interest of Mississippi for present and future generations?
- We see the overall project as a huge boost in alleviating the shortage of RV sites and accommodations in the area. It would also give the public a place to launch kayaks / boats and enjoy nature, birding, and fishing. This specific project would help restore and help protect this land from further erosion and allow many generations that follow the chance to enjoy nature at its best.
