9. Project Description/Overview
The City of Pascagoula is requesting GOMESA funds totaling $400,000 for safety improvements to the Beach Park Pier. This project involves the replacement of the existing deteriorated wood decking and handrails that have become unsafe due to storm surges and other weather conditions. Beach Park Pier and the Beachfront Promenade are among the most popular areas in our City, and is used daily by locals and tourists for fishing, exercise, picnicking or just to relax and enjoy the Gulf. The pier was heavily damaged in Katrina and rebuilt in 2008. The existing wood decking will be replaced with grated decking that will support conservation efforts to aquatic plants and sea grasses by minimizing light barriers underneath the pier, allowing sunlight to transmit and support continued growth. The decking material is water resistant and is able to withstand harsh marine weather conditions and storm surges. The replacement of deteriorated decking on the pier and transition ramps, along with new handrails will provide major safety improvements for public access to the waterfront. The new grated decking will decrease the risk of storm damage, reduce maintenance, and provide added durability. These improvements support the goals of GOMESA funds through infrastructure protection and continued implementation of the City of Pascagoula Strategic Plan.
10. Project Goals/Objectives
The goal of this project is to provide safety improvements for public access to the Beach Park Pier and to provide infrastructure improvements that are supportive of mitigation of storm damage and will add value to the area by providing quality of life benefits to Pascagoula residents and visitors. The objectives of the project include replacing deteriorated wood decking with decking made from water resistant, marine grade material and providing upgraded handrails and benches.

(B) Mitigation of damage to fish, wildlife, or natural resources.
Yes: The new grated decking material will support conservation efforts to aquatic plants and sea grasses by minimizing light barriers underneath the pier, allowing sunlight to transmit and support continued growth.
(C) Implementation of a federally-approved marine, coastal, or conservation management plan.
Yes: Pascagoula Strategic Plan
(D) Mitigation of the impact of Outer Continental Shelf activities through funding of onshore infrastructure projects.
