- 9. Project Description/Overview
- Jourdan River Shores is a subdivision located on the Jourdan River in Kiln, MS. Its water and sewer systems are managed by the Kiln Utility and Fire District. Currently, the Jourdan River Shores sewer system consists of a submerged 6" sanitary sewer force main that crosses a natural bayou directly connecting to the Jourdan River. The District's concern is that future residential construction projects could damage or break the force main and thus allow thousands of gallons of raw wastewater to flow directly into the Jourdan River. There is an existing project in Jourdan River Shores that plans to address the immediate concern by installing a new 6" PVC force main that discharges far away from the Jourdan River and repairing the existing manholes in the subdivision. The new proposed project would include installing approximately 21,250 LF of 3" PVC force main, and installing a grinder pump at each house that would connect to the 3" force main. This new line would connect to a different discharge location that is far away from any natural body of water.
- 10. Project Goals/Objectives
- 1. Further improve the Jourdan River Shores sewer system. 2. Install a sealed 3" PVC force main that would prevent leakage. 3. Install grinder pumps at each house to improve the efficiency of the sewer system.
- 11. Which of the following authorized uses set forth in the GOMESA Act does this project fall under?
- (A) Projects and activities for the purpose of coastal protection, including conservation, coastal restoration, hurricane protection, and infrastructure directly affected by coastal wetlands losses
- Yes: This project provides new infrastructure to eliminate the future raw sewer discharges into the Jourdan River by redirecting the point of discharge. It is also designed to resist hurricane forces and will eliminate any future needs for maintenance or repair of the submerged force main due to the damage caused by hurricane forces on the existing submerged sewer force main.
- (B) Mitigation of damage to fish, wildlife, or natural resources.
- Yes: Project protects our natural resources, coastal wetlands, fish, wildlife and natural resources by eliminating any future needs for maintenance or repair of the submerged force main due to damage caused by construction of bulkheads and or piers.
- (C) Implementation of a federally-approved marine, coastal, or conservation management plan.
- (D) Mitigation of the impact of Outer Continental Shelf activities through funding of onshore infrastructure projects.

- 14. Current status of architectural/engineering plans & specifications for this project (if applicable):
- In Progress Funds Not Budgeted
- 15. In what way does this project meet the goals and objectives of the Department of Marine Resources, which includes enhancing, protecting and conserving the marine interest of Mississippi for present and future generations?
- This project helps improve a sewer system that is currently very outdated and causes problems along the Jourdan River. It protects current and future marine interests by routing the subdivision's sewer discharge away from the Jourdan River and other natural bodies of water, which is better for the wildlife and natural resources in or near the Jourdan River. It also eliminates the need for future maintenance and repairs that are disruptive to the natural environment and could result in untreated wastewater being released into the river. This project is intended to aid the previously approved Force Main replacement project. This will help ensure that the new sewer line will not malfunction or overflow at any place in the Jourdan River Shores subdivision, so the river will be completely protected.
