- 9. Project Description/Overview
- The project will provide coastal protection, conservation, coastal restoration, hurricane protection, and infrastructure for coastal wetlands. The existing bulkhead and boardwalk along the Riverfront is failing. Several locations are eroding and the bulkhead has become a safety concern during events along the Riverfront and adjacent park area. This project will allow the City to stabilize the shoreline to compliment the adjacent, ongoing Downtown Revitalization project. The new bulkhead will be built with composite material, concrete, and steel to prevent the buckling or failure condition that currently exists. The use of stronger materials will provide a longer lasting structure which is more resilient to flooding events, tropical storms and hurricanes.
- 10. Project Goals/Objectives
- The project goals and objectives are centered oil the GOMESA program ideals to protect and conserve coastal resources.
- 11. Which of the following authorized uses set forth in the GOMESA Act does this project fall under?
- (A) Projects and activities for the purpose of coastal protection, including conservation, coastal restoration, hurricane protection, and infrastructure directly affected by coastal wetlands losses
- Yes: Moss Point's river systems are the city's greatest asset. The project is specifically designed to protect the shoreline, provide coastal conservation, restore damaged infrastructure, enhance hurricane protection to existing infrastructure. The areas to be protected are prone to erosion and are especially vulnerable to river flood events, tropical stom1s and hurricanes. The project will also reduce frequent maintenance as experienced by the existing timber pier and/or bulkhead systems. The locations are highly visible and are used by residents and visitors.
- (B) Mitigation of damage to fish, wildlife, or natural resources.
- (C) Implementation of a federally-approved marine, coastal, or conservation management plan.
- (D) Mitigation of the impact of Outer Continental Shelf activities through funding of onshore infrastructure projects.
- 12. Project Timetable/Milestones
- The project is designed to be completed in less than two years. Milestones include: * Acceptance of award by the Board of Aldermen * Advertisement of bids * Award of contracts * Begin construction * Complete the project * Ribbon Cutting, marketing and promotion of project success.
- 13. Project Timing
- Short-term
- 14. Current status of architectural/engineering plans & specifications for this project (if applicable):
- In Progress Funds Budgeted
- 15. In what way does this project meet the goals and objectives of the Department of Marine Resources, which includes enhancing, protecting and conserving the marine interest of Mississippi for present and future generations?
- The criteria is met specifically by the construction materials and methods at vulnerable sites that will enhance, protect and conserve the marine interest of Mississippi for present and future generations. The site is currently being undem1ined. The restored bulkhead will stabilize and protect the shoreline and water quality.
