- 10. Project Goals/Objectives
- The results of the dredging will also allow for properties with bayou access by boating, will be able to use the bayou again for recreation. Being able to access the bayou allows users the opportunity to access the Gulf of Mexico and its benefits of fishing, boating, and connection to other attractions. With the requested GOMESA funds, this project will restore this wetland area to pre-hurricane Katrina conditions and preserve the natural environment.
- 11. Which of the following authorized uses set forth in the GOMESA Act does this project fall under?
- (A) Projects and activities for the purpose of coastal protection, including conservation, coastal restoration, hurricane protection, and infrastructure directly affected by coastal wetlands losses
- (B) Mitigation of damage to fish, wildlife, or natural resources.
- Yes: This project will improve water quality in the area by removing nutrient-rich sediments, removing toxic substances, reducing rooted aquatic plant growth, and removing silts. The dredging will remove any debris, trash, and other materials that deposited in the bayou. The removal of this dredged material will produce a healthier aquatic eco-system which will result in a more suitable habitat and mitigate damage to fish, wildlife, and other natural resources.

- This project will improve water quality in the area by removing nutrient-rich sediments, remove toxic substances, reduce rooted aquatic plant growth, and lessen sediment suspension by winds and waves. The dredging will remove any debris, toxins, trash, and other materials that deposited in the bayou from Hurricane Katrina and other tropical systems. This project will also produce a healthier aquatic eco-system which will result in a more suitable habitat and mitigate damage to fish, wildlife, and other natural resources. The pipe installation will decrease the amount of erosion on the opposite bank therefore potentially eliminating the need for any future dredging. This project will also aid the City of Gulfport with planning and costs of compliance with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) regulations related to the MS4 Stormwater Program.
