- 9. Project Description/Overview
- This project aims to enhance the existing sewer infrastructure by expanding the sewer service from Hwy 43 to Cuevas Town Road which includes Hancock North Central Elementary School. The district currently has excess capacity for treatment through the sewer treatment partner, The Hancock Utility Authority. By increasing the coverage area and improving the efficiency of sewer collection services, this will ensure the reduction of discharge not entering into the public waters of the state of Mississippi, the Jourdan River and the Bay of St. Louis. An 8" PVC sewer main will be installed in county right of way on the roadside along the length of HWY 603. Tees will be placed on all road intersections for future sewer line extensions and gate valves will be placed every 2000 feet to comply with KUFD guidelines.
- 10. Project Goals/Objectives
- Provide an improved infrastructure system that will minimize the potential for pollutants to enter waterways, preserve water quality, and supporting the aquatic life. Provide sanitary sewer service to residents in an unserved area Provide a reduced cost to our current residents due to adding additional customers
- 11. Which of the following authorized uses set forth in the GOMESA Act does this project fall under?
- (A) Projects and activities for the purpose of coastal protection, including conservation, coastal restoration, hurricane protection, and infrastructure directly affected by coastal wetlands losses
- Yes: This project provides new infrastructure to eliminate the future raw sewer discharges into the Jourdan River and other nearby waterways by redirecting the point of discharge. It is also designed to resist hurricane forces and will eliminate any future needs for maintenance or repair the submerged force main due to the damage caused by hurricane forces on the existing submerged sewer force main.
- (B) Mitigation of damage to fish, wildlife, or natural resources.
- Yes: This project will help prevent wastewater from entering coastal streams and harming wildlife in the area.
- (C) Implementation of a federally-approved marine, coastal, or conservation management plan.
- (D) Mitigation of the impact of Outer Continental Shelf activities through funding of onshore infrastructure projects.
- Yes: This project will mitigate the impact of activities by preventing wastewater from entering coastal streams that flow into the Gulf of Mexico.

- 15. In what way does this project meet the goals and objectives of the Department of Marine Resources, which includes enhancing, protecting and conserving the marine interest of Mississippi for present and future generations?
- This project conserves and enhances Marine interest by improving the local sewer system. Connecting this area to a central sewer main will allow for better and trouble-free sewer service for residents in the area and will decrease the risk of sewage discharge. All work will be performed within existing county right of way, and dust control measures will be taken during construction. All land to be disturbed by this project has already been disturbed previously.
